Three Ways to Do Halloween in the 805, without Buying a Costume
Three nights, three towns, and zero jump scares (well, maybe one haunting)
VC Locals Only
Halloween creativity is not limited to pumpkins and costumes. Across Ventura County, artists, musicians, performers, and filmmakers are finding their own ways to celebrate the season. That makes this a particularly good week to step outside the familiar routine and spend an evening with something handmade, performed live, or projected on a screen. Start with an art market tonight, then save two more culture-forward experiences for later in the week.
October 22, 5–9 PM at Tarantula Hill Brewing, 25 local artists and live music from Darjeeling Photo Club
An art market is more interesting when you take time to talk with the makers. Ask what inspired a piece, look closely at the details, and remember that supporting a local artist does not require a major purchase. Even a conversation or a recommendation to a friend can help someone new discover their work.
October 25, 7 PM: The Sound of Fury concludes the Shadows & Secrets film series. Admission advertised at $10 at the door.
A film noir screening offers a different kind of seasonal mood. Instead of relying on jump scares, classic noir builds tension through atmosphere, moral uncertainty, and striking imagery. It is an appealing option for people who love cinema and want an October outing that feels a little unexpected.
October 26–29, 7 PM at the Ventura College Performing Arts Center; A Haunting in Ventura, with advertised $20 general and $5 student, staff, and senior tickets.
A campus performance gives local audiences another opportunity to see creative work close to home. Theater and performance spaces depend on people willing to show up, take a chance on a production, and share the experience afterward. Think of this as your invitation to make Halloween week a little more creative.
Halloween week around here is about more than pumpkins. Thursday, hit Tarantula Hill in Thousand Oaks for local art and live music. Sunday, catch some film noir at the Ojai Art Center. Then swing by Ventura College’s Fright Fest for A Haunting in Ventura, running the 26th through the 29th. Pick one, bring a friend, grab a bite nearby, and go see what your neighbors have been making.
