Community on Tap

Inside Topa Topa Brewing Company

VC Locals Only

September 10, 2026
Eleven years ago, Topa Topa Brewing Company opened its doors in a small downtown Ventura taproom with a simple mission: build a business rooted in community, powered by what founders Jack Dyer and Casey Harris still call “the greatest beverage in the world.” Today, that mission has grown into a 50,000-square-foot production facility, five taprooms across the Central and Southern Coast, nearly 70 employees, and close to 20,000 barrels of beer brewed a year — up from just 300 in year one.

Topa Topa’s headquarters, housed in a former Patagonia warehouse, functions as much as a community hub as a brewery. Its beer garden was re-landscaped with drought-tolerant, zero-irrigation native plants in partnership with Surfrider Foundation and Ventura Land Trust, turning a plain grass lot into a wildflower-filled gathering space with Channel Islands views. Families are part of the culture, too — “the Corral,” a small play area with a drink rail along its edge, lets kids climb while parents unwind nearby, a nod to the many longtime customers who met at Topa Topa and now return with their own children.

Inside, an event space called the barrel room hosts everything from quinceañeras to weddings, kept affordable so the neighborhood always has somewhere to gather. Regulars can also join the Collective, Topa Topa’s mug club, offering extra ounces per pour, merch discounts, and member-only events that have sparked real friendships over the years.

Then there’s the beer. Every batch starts with filtered Ventura water, moves through a four-vessel German brewhouse, and ferments in tanks ranging from 90 to 175 barrels. The result: a cold room dominated by Chief Peak IPA, the flagship brew that makes up roughly 70% of output and shows up on shelves at Whole Foods and Vons, on tap at the Santa Barbara Bowl, and across accounts region-wide.

Topa Topa also gives back, donating 1% of sales to environmental nonprofits through 1% for the Planet, and stands alongside fellow Ventura County breweries like Poseidon, Anacapa, and Institution in supporting the local craft scene. Eleven years in, it’s become the elder statesman of that scene — proof that community and craftsmanship go hand in hand.
